I didn’t want to include myself in the 9 Experts Share Their Top 7 Kit Items PDF, but others have been asking me about what my Top 7 Items are. I thought I would share them here.
One thing that I want to always share about kits, is that one-size doesn’t fit all. Your kit needs to reflect YOUR needs and YOUR situation. It is YOUR kit!
My Every Day Carry
Top Item – Smartphone
This first item won’t be popular for many who prepare for an EMP. But I don’t live my life waiting for the EMP to fry the grid! Smartphones are very powerful and offer many many benefits from staying in communication to providing APPS that can help you survive.
Item #2 – A Knife
I really like my Leatherman Wave. I have the add-on clip so I don’t have to wear the case on my belt. My only complaint is that it can get a little heavy at times. If I want something a little thinner, I go with my Kershaw Shallot (discontinued). The one finger speed safe deployment makes opening it super fast. When I’m wearing dress pants, like at work, I wear my Boker Urban Survival Knife with the optional head that makes it look like a pen.
Item #3 – Battery Charger
You can see I’m not focused on wilderness survival here. I spend a lot of times in meetings and I use my phone a lot. When I’m out and about, I use my charger – EasyAcc 12000mAh Power Bank (click for 2nd gen version), to keep my smartphone charged up. This sucker has a lot of juice! But the new version has even more!
Item #4 – Altoids Medical Kit
I carry my small Altoids Medical Kit with me in my backpack. I won’t go into the details of the contents here, but it is the kit I utilize the most, hands down!
Item #5 – Water
Water is so important! I keep my “fake Yeti” (Walmart brand) filled on my desk all day. I also carry a bottled water in my backpack in case I’m going to be out and about.
Item #6 – Wet Wipes (don’t laugh)
I keep wet wipes in my backpack at all times. I use them for when I need to wash off my hands, like if I’ve helped another teacher jump their car battery. But mostly, I use them to clean up spots on my shirt if I get dirty from lunch. Yes, don’t laugh. Sometimes I’m a slob! This mostly happens because I’m reading news articles while trying to eat. But still, no excuse!
Item #7 – Flashlight
I just recently purchased a Streamlight 66118 Stylus Pro LED PenLight. It is a little bigger than a regular pen, but it produces 90 Lumens of light! It comes with a case for your belt, but I keep it in my backpack. To be honest, I haven’t had to use my flashlight since I’ve moved to the central office. I have a bunch of windows. Sometimes I don’t even turn on my lights. I did use my EDC flashlight frequently on the campus if the lights went down because the hallways could get a little dark.
Well, that’s my Top 7 List. Of course, If I go out to the country, I have a whole different setup. But this is what I carry every day!
